Mayweather vs. McGregor: There's Only One Winner

Mayweather vs. McGregor. This money-making fight has been talked about for a good year and a half and later this month we finally get to see the two do battle... In Mayweather's arena...!

I'm going to set the tone of the blog right now, if you think McGregor stands a chance of beating Floyd Mayweather, then you are a fool! I'm sorry... But it's as simple as that...

I'm sure there is a rule in blogging against insulting your audience, but that is simply stating the facts.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to be proven wrong and see Mayweather lose his unbeaten record to, quite honestly, an amateur boxer, I just can't see it happening.

I've had this debate with several people, a lot of them seem to be thinking McGregor will win. Whether their judgement is clouded by desire is another matter, but the Irishman is the last person I would put money on in this contest.

You have to remember, Mayweather is undefeated as a professional boxer, and he wouldn't come out of retirement if he thought there was the slightest chance he would lose this fight. He's looking at it thinking "sweet, sh*t ton of money and a simple way to reach the nice round 50-0".

Not only that, Mayweather is arguably the greatest defensive fighter of all time. No matter how aggressive or attacking you think McGregor will be, Mayweather will have faced something similar and will have trained in preparation for it. If you've ever seen a Mayweather fight, they can be incredibly boring if you're not a huge boxing fan. You simply have to marvel at the quality of his defensive abilities.

McGregor is used to fighting in a completely different arena, in several ways, and some may think that his non-boxing approach will help him be unpredictable against Mayweather. I'm sorry, but it just isn't going to work like that. Conor will leave himself too open to counter-attacks with this style.

"Mark my words, McGregor will knock him out in four rounds." Give me a break.

You're trying to tell me that a someone who is pretty much an amateur boxer is going to come in and, not only beat, but knock-out an unbeaten professional?

McGregor won't be able to knock Mayweather down due to, as I've discussed, his sheer world class defensive abilities. Mayweather will look to take McGregor the distance. Mayweather is a pro at this, whereas McGregor hasn't gone further than round five in any of his fights. It's a long time for McGregor to be lifting gloves he isn't used to having on, surely causing him to tire easily.

And sure, he, McGregor, has thrown punches before. But it is so different going from the octagon to the boxing ring. Different skills are required. Different tactics. He's only trained solidly as a boxer since the turn of the year. It'll be the equivalent of Joe Root swinging a baseball bat for a few months and thinking he could crack the MLB. Similar traits, but totally different arena.

Putting himself into the world of boxing also takes away many of Conor's key traits. He loses his forearms, elbows and leg kicks and is left his just his fists. This is has been Mayweather's only weapon, being in boxing, throughout his career. McGregor can't kick away while he plans his next move.

Look. I'd love to see a McGregor win. It would be amazing. But it won't happen. This fight is purely for the money and entertainment. Not the sport or a test.

We shall see how it all unfolds though on Saturday 26th August, when I will still be watching, no matter what I've said.
